Spinal Manipulative Therapy

SMT or Spinal Manipulative Therapy is a form of hands on treatment including both manipulation and mobilization. Mobilization involves moving a joint within its normal range of motion starting with short and gentle motions gradually increasing to include full physiological range of motion.

Manipulation is a passive technique wherein the therapist applies a specifically directed manual impulse at a high velocity and low amplitude to a specified joint in a specified direction. This impulse or thrust is applied at or near the end range of passive (or physiological) range of motion, often producing an audible ‘crack.’ The selection of the joint and the direction of the thrust are determined by thorough examination.

SMT is designed to restore normal range of motion in the affected joint, restoring function and reducing pain in the joint itself and its surrounding structures.
